What We’ve Been Playing: 30/05/10

Not had a lot of time to play any games for a long period of time this week. Slooowly making my way through the Red Dead Redemption story and been playing a bit of 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa. Other than that I’ve been playing Blast Off (PSP mini) which I got free from FirstPlay on Wednesday. Simple but fun! Lastly played a tiny bit of Coconut Dodge which is amazing fun, totally addictive and will probably be my most played game by then end of the week.

I’ve played Coconut Dodge a fair amount this week, trying to get further through the levels and get higher up on the scoreboard (without a huge amount of success, I must say). It’s really addictive and you’ve probably heard me go on about it all week so I’ll spare you…for now. I got into Red Dead Redemption properly as well, and have been making a bit of progress through the story. It’s extremely easy to get sidetracked with the challenges, stranger missions and random encounters, but it’s brilliant; it all works seamlessly and never feels disjointed. The main problem with the game so far is that it’s so much like GTAIV, and thus suffers from the same faults. I’ve heard the term “GTA with horses” being thrown around, and despite what people say it’s a lot closer to the truth than you might think.

This week, I had another couple rounds of ModNation Racers and Split/Second (oh all right, “Velocity” too, you pedants), even though I am inherently rubbish at racing games.  A little shot of Monster Hunter Freedom Unite on the PSP as well as a brief go at Coconut Dodge, which is shaping up to be quite a nice little game here.  Other than that, not much really, got to love real life getting in the way, don’t you?

Had my first exam this week, so at the start of the week I was just playing Modern Warfare 2 in small doses, along with a marathon game on Rock Band 2 with Yamster, where we ROCKED OUT SO HARD. After my exam on Thursday, I bought ModNation Racers. It is extremely fun, but the idea of the track editor is to create an awesome track really quickly, rather than a super complex track that takes a lot of time – much to my disappointment. The racing itself is super fun and it is a really great opposition to Mario Kart. That’s about it really for this week, I suspect next week I’ll have even less gaming time!

This week, I’ve been wrestling bears, revisiting the Big Apple in digital form and shooting tangos. I’ve got about 85% completion in the single player of Red Dead Redemption and I think I’m going to go for the platinum. The game is incredible fun and continues to amaze even after completing the excellent story, just as a Rockstar game should (Looking at you here, GTA IV). Speaking of GTA IV, I’ve been playing the absolutely brilliant Episodes of Liberty City. The Ballad of Gay Tony is exactly how GTA IV should have been. Fun, not too serious and full of outlandish lunacy that makes messing around just as much fun as completing the main missions. I’m yet to finish The Lost & Damned, but what I have played of it has been enjoyable, but not to the standards of Gay Tony. Finally, the usual sessions of MW2. I’ve found I haven’t touched it on PS3. Having platinumed it and reached tenth prestige, I’ve got nothing left to do on it now. I’ve learnt my lesson and will most certainly be waiting before I prestige on the rather splendid sounding Black Ops. But then, Treyarch will be giving DLC to the co-op side of their game (Looking at you here, Infinity Ward) to add some more longevity to it when it does get released. Yay Zombies!
