UFC 2009 Undisputed was quite a good game. The fighting, commentary and visuals were all perfect but lacked a good career mode. This year’s instalment will hopefully improve on the career mode but for now we only have the demo to test out.
The demo features 2 modes, Exhibition and Tournament, as well as 4 fighters: Lyoto Machida, Rashad Evans, Rampage Jackson and Shogun Rua. The Exhibition mode allows players to choose any of the 4 fighters and fight against any of the remaining 3 in a 3 or 5 round fight. You can also choose between 4 game difficulties: Beginner, Experienced, Advanced and Expert. The Tournament mode allows players to choose between 4 and 18 fighters to battle it out for the Light-Heavyweight belt. Choosing 18 fighters, though, will result in playing the same fighter multiple times as there are still only 4 fighters to choose from. The game plays pretty much the same as it did last year but with minor improvements that make the fighting flow a lot better.
The look of the demo, and ultimately the game, is a vast improvement over last year’s offering. The menus are quick and easy to navigate, with the ticker at the bottom of the screen offering tips on how to fight better in addition to random pieces of information regarding previous UFC fights and events. It also looks and sounds as good as it did last year with Bruce Buffer, Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg all offering their voices to perfect the game’s authenticity.
