Some of you may have heard of Plants vs. Zombies. It’s a tower defence game featuring both Plants AND Zombies. You may also be aware it was developed and published by PopCap Games, the current leader in undercutting the big dogs for sheer entertainment value with their addictive and simple casual-style games. Well, PopCap have seen fit to release not only a PC version, but an iPod/iPhone version with full touchscreen capability. Sweet!
Having said, PvZ is not really a casual game; it’s a tower defence game with a nice twist, so it feels fresh. It’s also an interesting concept: flowers aren’t really the most-thought-of thing to deter a Zombie Apocalypse, but hey-ho, I’m willing to go along with it.
You collect Sun which acts as your in-game currency, either through falling sun drops, or from buildable Sunflowers/Mushrooms, and then use this to plant many, many flowers to guard your home from the encroaching zombies. Pretty standard for a TD game, but it’s on the horizontal plane, with five straight paths to your house through the garden. The zombies follow one of these five, and you have to put all sorts of things in the way to stop them: Cherry Bombs, Pea Shooters, WallNuts, sploding Potatoes and so on.
It’s fun, funny, and tactical, with over 40 types of plants that you can use, Day and Night game modes, bowling sections (yes, bowling with Walnuts) and all sorts of crazy other humourous PopCap fun.
It’s an absolute bargain too, so it’s definitely one not to be missed.
