Originally released back in 2008 for the iPhone, Fieldrunners is a military themed Tower Defense game where your aim is to stop the titular Fieldrunners from reaching your bases. The PlayStation mini version features 5 maps for you to play (the original iPhone release had 3), and can be played in any of the three available game modes: Classic, Extended and Endless. The first two modes require you to defeat 100 waves for victory, whereas endless gives you infinite waves to battle through.

At your disposal to dispatch your foes are a number of towers, from your basic Gatling Towers, which are rapid firing and weak, to Tesla Towers, which fire electricity bolts at nearby enemies, and even Flame Towers, which erase Fieldrunners with a jet a of fire. Some towers, such as the Flame Tower, are restricted to certain game modes, mixing up the gameplay and skill required. Every tower can be upgraded using your hard earned cash (gained by killing enemies), which increases both range and damage.

The controls on the PS3/PSP work incredibly well, with the d-pad moving the cursor around the map, the shoulder buttons selecting different towers, and the X button for your tower placement, selection and upgrading. The graphics are superb for a mini, with good detailing, nice animation and vibrant colours. Sound effects are delightfully punchy and the background tunes are jolly, militarily-themed affairs which are a nice addition to the game, rather than a nerve-grating annoyance.

A high quality game with endless replayability, Fieldrunners is an absolute must for any Tower Defense fans out there.
