First Impression: UK Truck Simulator

Simulators never attack the market as most other titles do; they have their own little niche, fan base and you rarely see ads for them plastered all over the net. It’s with this thought, then, that made me go into the game trying to judge it and play it without comparing it to the likes of BioShock 2, Mass Effect 2, or any other big titles released so far this year.

When looking over all the genres I’ve ever played, there has always been a big hole where simulators should be. It’s not that I hate the sight of them, I’ve just never got around to trying them out amongst the flurry of big hitters. Over the past few days, though, I’ve been trying out UK Truck Simulator, the sequel to Euro Truck Simulator. After my first couple of hours with it, it’s left me in two minds.

For quality, I would be lying if I said it was bad. It’s not. Nothing about the game has particularly blown me away, but on the other hand, nothing has broken either. Everything works and functions as it should, but it’s perhaps just missing that edge which shifts it up a notch from ‘generic’. My main issue so far is the system requirements, which are crazily high. My gaming laptop, which has previously seen BioShock run on everything max, struggles to run UK Truck Simulator on the lowest resolution, which baffles me.

What makes me in two minds, however, is the lack of variety. Whilst I’m still only a novice and hauling for other people, it’s so far just been a case of picking up a trailer, delivering it, picking up another one, delivering it etc. I’m expecting it to pick up a little as I increase my driver reputation and eventually start my own business, but progress has so far been slower than I would have enjoyed.
